The West Tower Jail facility is located within the Lew Sterrett Justice Center. The West Tower has 132 tanks and 25 single cells. It can house up to 1478 male inmates.
The West Tower houses a variety of Classifications besides medium, maximum custody inmates. These classifications include: Class "C" Trusty, Infirmary, lower bunk medical restriction, closed behavioral observation, suicidal, HIV, homosexual and sex crimes against children. The inmates are housed accordingly.
The West Tower has four unique functions:
* The Infirmary serves male inmates who need special medical treatment. This could include lower bunk medical restricted inmates, HIV positive inmates and/or any other medical condition deemed necessary for needing special medical attention.
* The Closed and Open Behavioral Observation section of the jail serves male inmates who are declared mentally incompetent by the courts or who have been determined as such by a physiologist or a member of the medical staff.

* The Suicidal tanks serve male inmates who have been determined to be at risk for possibly committing suicide. These inmates are monitored closely by Dallas County Sheriff's Department personnel 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These inmates are also evaluated by medical staff multiple times a day to determine if the inmate is still at risk for committing suicide.
* The Class "C" Trusty tanks serve inmates who have been granted Trusty status by the Sheriff's Department. Trusty status is granted based on classification.
