What is a Sheriff?

The Sheriff is the principal law enforcement officer within a county where the individual is elected. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, traffic enforcement, courtroom security, warrant execution, inmate housing, patrol of unincorporated areas.

Unlike municipal law-enforcement agencies, the Sheriff has jurisdiction in all areas of the county including cities within Dallas County.

The Dallas County Sheriff's Department has an operating budget of 132 million dollars. We employ more than 1,600 personnel and run seven different jail systems with the average population of 8,400 inmates.

Open Shoot Day Saturday 20-June-09:
All sworn personnel are invited to come out and shoot.  Ammunition must be brought unless the Deputy is going to shoot an annual qualification course, in which case the department will provide fresh duty ammo.
