What is the Dallas Sheriff’s Citizens Academy?

The Dallas Sheriff’s Academy is an eight week course that meets once a week in an effort to provide citizens an opportunity to learn about the many facets of Law Enforcement, the Criminal Justice System and the confinement operations of Dallas County’s more than 7,500 capacity jail facilities. After graduation from the academy, citizens are encouraged to join the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni and volunteer their skills and assistance as we work together side by side to provide quality law enforcement service to the citizens of Dallas County.

Citizens Academy Mission
The Dallas County Sheriff’s goal is to educate citizens on the operations of the Department through a series of lectures and hands-on activities. Through this program we hope to increase public awareness, open lines of communication and increase rapport between Dallas County Communities and the Sheriff’s Department.

What kind of courses will I take?
Students are instructed in the areas of Patrol/Field Enforcement Procedures, Communications and 9-1-1, Criminal Courts and Jail House Procedures, Felony Warrant Service and Use of force, K9, and Crime Scene Investigations. Students will also have the opportunity to ride along with a Field Law Enforcement Officer and spend time in Communications where all 9-1-1 calls are taken.  Additionally, Saturday classes will allow students to experience tactical training as well as shoot firearms at the gun range. The Citizen's Academy is taught by Regular, Reserve and Civilian Law Enforcement personnel.

Who Can Attend?
If you would like to become more familiar with the many aspects of the criminal Dallas County Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice procedures, and experience the satisfaction of providing worthwhile enhancement to the Sheriff’s Department while giving back to the community, you would make an excellent candidate for this course.
Citizens that are 18 years of age or older, possess a valid Texas Drivers License and are willing to consent to a background check may submit application to the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy. Sheriff Citizens Academy alumni are volunteers. They do not have peace officer powers and they may not carry a weapon at any time.
